Set mostly in London during the holiday season, the lives of many are shown during the ins and outs of love.
Aging rock star Billy Mack is searching for a comeback. He's taken one of his biggest hits, changed the lyrics and turned it into a Christmas song. He now finds himself facing off with one of pop music's most popular boy bands, Blue, to see which will top the Christmas charts. Billy does it with refreshing honesty, much to the horror of his manager, Joe. He appears on radio shows, talk shows, films music videos and finally makes it to the top. However, at Christmas he finds that the person who means the most to him is the one who's always been there with him, his manager.
David is the newly elected Prime Minister and as he settles into his job he finds that there's more to deal with than running the country. He isn't the only one starting a job there, Natalie is as well and she immediately embarrasses herself in front of him. He can't help but be immediately smitten, but also finds her distracting. David soon finds himself tested when the President of the United States meets with him and David stands up him, making his position very clear. Now with England firmly behind him, David is still distracted around Natalie and asks that she be transferred. However, he misses her and goes to her neighborhood, searching house by house until he finds her. The two come together in a very public display of affection at the local school Christmas concert.
David's sister Karen and her husband Harry have a normal marriage and have for quite some time. She makes a nice home for them and he goes to work every day. His new secretary, Mia, though, proves quite tempting and leaves not so subtle hints at Harry that she is interested in more than a working relationship. Harry jeopardizes his marriage by purchasing an extravagant Christmas gift for Mia, which Karen finds and believes to be for her. She is crushed to discover it isn't and confronts Harry about it before he acts on his impulses.
Sarah works with Harry and has had a crush on the enigmatic chief designer, Karl, of their company since about thirty minutes since she began her job there. The two rarely speak but do exchange pleasantries. The share a dance at the office Christmas party and when he drives her home, things go a bit further. As they're about to make love, her mentally challenged brother calls. Karl asks if answering will help her brother. She says no, but answers anyway and Karl leaves.
Juliet and Peter have just gotten married with Peter's best friend Mark standing up as best man. Sarah asks if Mark is in love in Peter because of his attitude throughout the day and Juliet believes that Mark doesn't like her since he's never warmed up to her. When Juliet needs a picture of herself in her wedding dress, she asks Mark since she knows he was filming a lot throughout the day. He tries to say no, but she insists and drops by unexpectedly. As they watch the video, Juliet notices that the only one on the tape is her and all the shots are close-ups. As realizations dawns on her, Mark tries to hide his face in embarrassment. She questions him, saying he never talks to her and doesn't like her but he leaves before they can talk. They don't speak again, but on Christmas Eve he shows up at her and Peter's with poster board and a boom box playing 'Silent Night' saying that to him, she is perfect and his wasted heart will love her. She gives him a quick kiss before running back into her husband.
Colin, who worked as a waiter at Juliet and Peter's wedding, finds that he is often unlucky in love. He tells his friend Tony that girls in America would love him because of his cute British accent and that he is going to go there and have lots of sex. He rents out his flat, buys his ticket, packs a lot of condoms and arrives in Wisconsin heading straight towards an average bar. Once there he immediately meets three beautiful girls who find his accent charming and adorable. They invite him to stay at their place with them and by the time Colin returns to England, he's brought another American girl home with him.
Tony also works on a film set where John and Judy are stand ins for actors. The two have to mime various sexual positions and immediately strike up conversation, finding it nice to finally have someone they can talk to. John plucks up the courage to ask Judy out for a drink and she happily agrees. As he drops her off at home, she kisses him and tells him that all she wants for Christmas is him.
After finding his brother and girlfriend are having an affair, author Jamie Bennett heads to France. There he finds himself attracted to the woman hired to clean the house he is renting. The problem is that she only speaks Portuguese and he only speaks English. She is also attracted to him even though they can't speak to one another. When he returns to England he attempts to learn her language. On Christmas Eve, as he arrives at his family gathering, he immediately turns to leave and gets on a plane to propose to Aurelia, who accepts and has been trying to learn English.
Daniel's wife has just died, leaving him to care for his stepson Sam. Daniel has noticed that Sam has seemed so down and depressed and there's nothing he can do about it. Daniel gets him out of the house and finally gets Sam to admit that he is in love. He was before his mother died and he still is. The girl is named Joanna, the same as Sam's mother, and is American. Sam intends to impress Joanna by learning to play the drums and performing at the school Christmas concert before she flies back to America. He performs brilliantly, but doesn't get a chance to talk to Joanna before she leaves. Daniel drives Sam to the airport and helps him slip past security so he can run through the airport. Once he reaches Joanna he is delighted to find out that she does know his name and as he returns to Daniel he turns around to find Joanna has followed him. She gives him a quick kiss before leaving, but they meet again when she returns.
