Troian Bellisario portrays Spencer Hastings, who is the athletic and intelligent one. When her sister and her fiancee move in while their house is being renovated, Spencer is forced to give up the loft that she worked so hard to renovate, so that her sister and her fiancee can move into it. Spencer also finds herself increasingly attracted to her sister's boyfriend, who "A" warns not to kiss or she will tell. But Spencer does kiss him (Wren), and her sister catches them, causing Wren to move out. Through a flashback, we see Spencer once kissed one of her sister's past boyfriends. Wren kisses Spencer, in which Melissa sees before leaving, where Spencer pulls away. Melissa kicks Wren out and gives Spencer a hard time, even her parents don't acknowledge her. Spencer has difficulty writing her paper because of this, and instead steals Melissa's from years ago and sends it in under her name. The school loves the paper so much, Spencer is nominated for a national award... one that she doesn't deserve. At the sleepover where Alison is last seen alive, Spencer had woken before the others and had already looked around for Alison and returned when Aria, Hanna and Emily woke. Spencer finds it hard impressing her father, which Melissa is usually better at.
